Prime Small Screen Selections: Seven Must-Watch Films This Coming Week

Pick of the Week

This Satirical Thriller

The filmmaker's unflinching commentary tackles the demanding standards for women's appearance as well as the perceived horrors of growing older. The veteran actress offers an inspired performance as Elisabeth, a mature celebrity reduced to starring in an aerobics show on TV. Pushed out due to her slimy boss Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she undergoes a secretive and gruesome treatment titled "The Substance". This generates a youthful duplicate named Sue, culminating in an increasingly toxic connection between them. Friday 17 October, Paramount+

This Mystery Thriller

This suspenseful thriller includes Knightley as Laura, an ace reporter who opts for a hiatus from reporting on international wars to board a high-end voyage alongside a gravely sick wealthy inheritor and philanthropist, her spouse, as well as other filthy rich individuals. Yet once an enigmatic female falls into the sea one night and the entire crew denies she ever existed, the reporter's sleuthing skills take over. Out now, the Netflix platform

Presence Film

Soderbergh pushes his film-making abilities through this nifty ghostly tale shot entirely through the eyes of the spirit. After a clan featuring mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe occupies their new suburban house, the lens – as the unseen entity – follows them around. The daughter appears conscious of the supernatural presence, and it looks like guarding her. However, the motive remains? This is an entertaining concept that avoids overstaying, with a twist that could catch you off guard. This Saturday, multiple showings, Sky Cinema Premiere

This Self-Referential Film

Cage fully commits to his unique fame via this meta comedy caper. He portrays a self-obsessed film star called Nicolas Cage who accepts a million-dollar gig to visit a celebration at a Mediterranean location for the rich Javi Gutierrez. Hired by government spies to gather intel on the potential kingpin, Cage's unconventional method comes in handy. October 11th, 9pm, Channel 4

This Creepy Thriller

Scott Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller remains effective without requiring a follow-up. Set in 1978 Denver, multiple disappearances has rendered the youth on edge. When Finney gets captured by “the Grabber” and held captive in a dungeon, he anticipates a fatal end. But the non-functional line on the wall repeatedly calls, with eerie communicators providing assistance, while the prescient dreams of his sister Gwen might rescue him. A genuinely scary movie. This Saturday, 10.50pm, the Film4 channel

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the conflict between spirituality and money, it's a knockout win for Mammon in Showalter's delightfully tacky true story of the disgraced religious broadcaster and her criminal husband. Garfield plays the greedy Jim, who declares early on, “God does not want us to be poor,”. Both individuals set about profiting from the nation's Christian beliefs. It's an extravaganza of poor styling, excessive cosmetics and hypocrisy, however Jessica Chastain succeeds to present the real-life figure in a likable light. October 14th, early morning, Film4

Black Bag

The current week's additional entry from the filmmaker is a spy mystery as tight like the turtlenecks sported by the actor's UK spy. His assignment is to discover a traitor within their ranks out of five possibilities – one of whom is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Both actors are masters of calm composure, leading to a delightful psychological game of truth or lie develops. The supporting cast join in the intelligent intelligence fun. Friday 17 October, multiple time slots, Sky Cinema Premiere
