Our Leading Album of 2025: Rosalía's Lux Secures the Premier Place.

At first glance, this album could seem more like an arduous university challenge rather than the latest popular music record from an artist whose last single was a collaboration with a global pop icon. Split across 4 separate movements and voiced in 13 languages, this is a dizzying orchestral-influenced opus investigating feminine mystique, spiritual ascent, and bodily transformation, frequently through the lens of different female saints. The dissolution of a romance—a topic handled with raw openness elsewhere—soars upwards here, supported by the lush sound of a full orchestra and work from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter among a vast list of contributors. The pure audacity alone makes the work of contemporary artists appear quite modest.

Rising Above Academic Exercise

That this album manages to transcend overly intellectual posturing is nearly miraculous, and sole praise going to Rosalía. Although it's not the first time project to blend the past with the present, its scale are much higher here, and the tightrope walk far more pronounced. What really elevates her fourth release, outside of its multilayered melodies, rich arrangements, and inherent drama, proves to be an essential spirit of joy. Similar to the iconic Björk at her peak, there is a wondrous sense to Rosalía's singing that pulls you into its whirlwind. Even when she's breaking your heart in two, you still desire to be right there through the journey.

A Signature Example of Joy

This exuberant spirit comes forth brightly during a stunning Italian ballad about Saint Clare. It bathes in a sorrowful whirlpool for more than four minutes. Suddenly, everything falls away, to reveal there's a spontaneous giggle and a declaration before a hilariously exaggerated string surge thuds down like comedic impact. The song immediately segues to the frenetic single featuring racing orchestration, a powerful choral group, and a cameo role from the artist herself.

"The charm of this album lies in the listener rarely exactly understand—or even want to predict—where you will go to next."

Almost each song ends at a totally distinct point than where it started. A track explores the fleeting nature of fame with a featherlight symphony only to collapsing into electronic chaos. Elsewhere, a cut that recalls her previous trap-infused style begins out dark and brooding, with menacing vocals, before sudden traditional handclaps and an angelic chorus enter to soften its jagged corners.

The Balance Of Experiment and Pop

Another crucial balancing act on Lux involves straddling the line of bold innovation and broad accessibility. This is little surprise that it has become the artist's highest-charting release to break into the Top 5 of major markets: at its core a suite of truly undeniable hits. A song sung entirely in English builds around a refrain that feels to gather increasingly infectious melodies as it spirals skyward. This feat is echoed on a different expansive track that grows and contracts, intertwining multiple tunes as an intricate tapestry.

  • A waltz-like song charms with its jaunty, theatrical flair and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares the cultural impact of contemporary heartbreak anthems, lambasting an ex- partner labeled an "emotional bully".
  • Throughout the album, the vocals have a painted-on edge, akin to a storybook figure concealing a blade: "Gold medal in acting like a scoundrel / You've the podium of letdown."

An Opulent Feast for the Ears

This album is pop on a grand scale, an ambitious grasp for high Art in an era of impending artificial blankness. It rejects self-absorption for sublime transcendence, crafting an over-the-top spectacle that masterfully manages its built-in ridiculousness. This is a deep source of buried treasure that requires patience to fully explore but doesn't feels like hard work. While some major releases of 2025 seemed like feasting on scraps, this record is a sumptuous feast where the guests at the table, some intoxicated on holy wine, flit from discussions about ancient saints, the profound feeling of soul-shattering sadness, and common stories about hopeless men. It is a modern-day musical from pop's most endlessly creative practitioner.
