Giorgia Meloni Criticizes Union Leader for ‘Trump Courtesan’ Comment
The Italian Prime Minister has strongly condemned the leader of the major Italian trade union after he labeled Meloni as the “courtesan” of ex-President Donald Trump.
Background of the Controversial Remarks
Maurizio Landini, leading the CGIL union, uttered the words during a television appearance on Tuesday. This followed global figures, including Meloni, convened for a Middle East peace summit hosted by Egypt.
The union leader accused the Prime Minister of “doing nothing” to promote peace in Gaza, remarking her participation was confined to “serving as Trump’s courtesan”. “Fortunately, citizens of Italy demonstrated to defend the honor and dignity of this country,” he commented.
Meloni’s Response
In a social media post this Thursday, Meloni remarked that the union chief was obviously obscured by increasing animosity (that I comprehend)”. She went on to share a meaning of the word “courtesan”.
“I think it is widely understood the primary definition attributed to this word, but, to assist anyone unfamiliar, I’m publishing the top definition found through a simple web search,” Meloni said, providing a capture that stated: “Woman of loose morals, heterosexual; substitute term, prostitute.”
Meloni further condemned her political rivals on the left, noting that over many years they had admonished us on gender equality” only to then disparage a woman by “labeling her a prostitute”.
Union Leader’s Explanation
Reacting to the Prime Minister’s comments, Landini maintained that there were “no sexist insults” directed at Meloni and that his use of “Trump’s subordinate”.
In a statement, he explained: “During a brief interview, readily accessible to all, to prevent misinterpretation or exploitation of the term, I made it clear my intended meaning – that Meloni was trailing behind Trump, she was at Trump’s court, she served as Trump’s underling.”
Connection with the US President
Meloni has long nurtured amicable ties with President Trump. During a speech in Egypt, the US President faced the Italian Prime Minister – the only woman present at the summit – and called her “beautiful”. “In the US, it would be the end of your political career,” he remarked. “However, I will risk it. May I comment that you are beautiful? As you are indeed beautiful.”
President Trump subsequently commended Meloni as “motivational to all” in concerning the English edition of her work, I Am Giorgia: My Roots, My Principles, which contains a preface by Trump’s son.
Past Events
During the summer, the Prime Minister responded firmly after learning that doctored photos of Meloni and other well-known Italian females had been posted on a pornographic website, saying she was “disgusted”, and expressing “solidarity and support to the women who have been offended, insulted and violated”.
