The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
