British Extends Toxic Alcohol Poisoning Advisory List with An additional 11 Destinations
The UK Foreign Office has placed 11 further countries to its public advisory register about the threats of toxic alcohol contamination from tainted beverages.
This expanded warning features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to what officials describe as "an international surge in the incidence of reported cases" of toxic alcohol contamination.
Only recently, the government had earlier placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current roster, after multiple serious events such as the deadly death of six visitors in Laos in 2024.
Travellers are being advised that as little as minimal doses of methanol can result in vision loss or loss of life within twelve to forty-eight hrs.
What is Methanol and How is it Used?
Methanol is a poisonous chemical typically employed in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and thinner. This substance is not meant for human consumption.
While it is naturally produced during the manufacture of spirits, licensed producers lower it to low, safe levels for human consumption through the refining procedure.
However in some countries, it is illegally mixed into spirits to cut costs, and as it is tasteless and odourless, it is extremely challenging to detect.
Government Recommendations for Tourists
Government official the minister emphasized that every traveler should know the indicators of industrial alcohol contamination.
"If you're consuming alcohol abroad, stick to well-known venues and steer clear of local brews or unspecified beverages," the official warned.
"If something appears suspicious, such as a hangover that's much more severe than normal or vision problems – get medical help fast."
The entire list of destinations listed as presenting a danger of toxic alcohol toxicity now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
